Even the Dimmest Candle

A Reflection from Fr. Benedict Groeschel's Book, "Quiet Moments":

"Light is an especially potent symbol. How utterly dark this world would be without the illumination that God provides. Imagine descending into the deepest coal mine, surrounded by pitch black. The only way your eyes could penetrate the darkness closing in upon you would be by means of the small lamp attached to your miner’s hat. . .      I think divine illumination operates in our spiritual lives in somewhat the same way as a single candle. God promises  to shine his light on our pathway, but usually only a few steps ahead at a time. Although on rare occasions a floodlight may break through our fleshly fog, we tend to complain that we’ve been given only flashlights―with batteries that seem to go dead at crucial moments! But we don’t necessarily need searchlights or laser beams to make progress on our spiritual journey. God is able to use even the dimmest candlelight to illuminate the path ahead."
